Upon purchasing the NEST thermostat last week, I proceeded to install it on my house, connecting the wires as instructed, following the instructions explicitly. The thermostat was beautifully crafted and looked great on my wall, and when switched on via the power breaker, was very easy to configure.
There was only one problem. It doesn’t know how to communicate with my Trane A/C unit. Apparently it’s not a NEST problem (so they say.) I’d say it is a NEST problem as there are thousands of units out there in the world owned by thousands of home owners who may or may not want the NEST thermostat on their house.
I was so impressed by the design and ease of use too. I’m terribly disappointed. For those of you who are home owners who are thinking about replacing the thermostat on your house with the new NEST learning thermostat, please make sure you consult the following list, which was provided to me by NEST after I notified them of the problem and struggled with two separate thermostats to see if it was in fact NEST causing the problem.
The real tragedy here is that there’s nowhere on their website as of this posting that indicates which models are or are not compatible with NEST.
The following TRANE models have been flagged for incompatibility per the message received from them today:
I am really sorry for any inconvenience you have experienced.
It appears that your system is not compatible with the Nest. We do have a list of incompatible HVAC systems and Trane is a rather lengthy portion of this list.
All the following models are on this list:
XC95M, XC95, XC80
XV80, XC80, XL80
